  • Drag Strips are starting to ban EVs

Doesn't hurt my feelings. Why should a track invest a ton of money for safety equipment for less than a percent of racers who have EVs?

Serves the pricks with Teslas right. They video tape beating muscle and then post it and laugh and brag.

My nephew is a St Paul Firefighter and they have special training to deal with EV crashes so they don't get electrocuted. Can't just use jaws of life without a number of procedures. Then if there's an unlikely fire, it takes crazy amounts of water to extinguish compare to a regular ICE vehicle.

As of January 2026, select drag strips, most notably Orlando Speed World Dragway, have banned fully electric vehicles (EVs) from competition and testing due to safety concerns. The bans focus on the high risk of, and difficulty in extinguishing, lithium-ion battery fires, along with, potential, electrical hazards to first responders.
Key details regarding the ban on EVs:
    • Safety Hazards: Compromised EV batteries can release toxic, flammable gases and cause intense fires that are difficult to manage, requiring specialized, expensive equipment.
    • First Responder Risk: Concerns exist regarding, potential, electrocution risks to,, personnel handling wrecked vehicles, and, the fact that, doors may not unlock from the outside.
    • Specific Bans: Orlando Speed World Dragway in Florida implemented a ban effective January 8, 2026, for all, fully electric vehicles, though hybrids are still allowed.
    • Industry Impact: These, measures highlight, unresolved, safety, questions for, grassroot, tracks, and, suggest, increased, liability, concerns, from,, insurance, companies.

Just like at the Rock a few years ago when an electric dragster started on fire in the pits, and the track crew couldn't put the fire out. The car owned suffered hand burns and NHRA impounded the car and banned all electrics at the track for the rest of the year. For me the other problem is when someone with one of these electric cars races in 8's with no safety equipment other than a helmet. If they crash the above like the Orlando track did is warranted and I applaud them for doing so.
